Artifice-Blu “Big Bang Big Boom”

Chasen Paper, 5 July, 2010

What are you doing right now? Stop it and watch this video created by the artist Blu, not to be confused with the other Blu who is an emcee. Anything that’s dope that goes up on a wall illegally is cool here.

Jon Naar is a photographer that documented the explosive birth of graffiti in NYC over 30 years ago in a book called Faith of Graffiti. Super O.G Snake breaks down some of the photos taken in the book and the writers he remembers. Seeing the dude break down graf from his childhood and knowing where it’s progressed today gives you a wonderful sense of history a feeling for the many artistic semi independent subcultures that connect up to form hip hop. It’s deep.

Frank 151’s AWR/MSK issue

Chasen Paper, 10 June, 2010

If you haven’t checked it out yet, shoot over to FRANK 151’s website to see excerpts from their latest issue documenting legendary graf crew MSK/AWR. The word “legendary” is thrown around so wantonly these days that’s why if you’re a graf buff or a hip hop head you should read this issue and learn what real work ethic is. Starting in the 80’s these cats went from kids bombin’ tunnels and streets in L.A and S.F to executing world wide marketing campaigns for international companies, taking the tattoo world by the horns, clothing companies, and tackling the world’s galleries and walls. If you want to know how to create a legacy, there it is. Check it out HERE

Artifice-Espo Speaks @ PSFK Conference 2010

Chasen Paper, 21 May, 2010

One of the dopest artists to spring from the streets to the galleries, Espo will go down as one of the dopest masters of communication through graffiti art ever. Trust me. The doot looks like a Louis V’d up graf mad scientist.

Since it’s Slapper Sunday it’s only correct we start it off with “Sam’s Sundae” from Bi-Rite Cremery. The treat is an example of simplicity @ it’s most excellent. Chocolate ice cream with bergamot olive oil, maldon sea salt and whipped cream. Get up on magic.

Steve Powers aka “Espo” demonstrates again why he’s my favorite contemporary artist to come out of the graf scene (oh and Morning Breath) His images have crossed almost every style boundary and have become art that is so absorbable it’s almost like a street sign. But there are still the veins of graf intuition in there if you know where to look.
