For 15 years The Jacka has been cutting his own kind of dope and pitching it to eager consumers of mob influenced hip hop across the world. His current release “Got Bots 2 The D-Boy Era” featuring crushing re-productions of classic hip hop era beats with his homie Lee Majors falls neatly into that slot he’s cut for himself. It’s notoriously tough to track down the Jacka, he’s constantly moving like a shark swimming through the ocean. Picking up people, doing shows across the country and sitting only long enough to write a solid verse and he’s back on the move. His words are backed by a solid street cred on and off the mic, partially having to do with him making his first 6 figures off hip hop when he was just 17 straight out of high school and never looking back. One could even say after listening to this interview that The Jacka was born into hip hop and he truly experienced the 80’s…those halcyon days known as the first Golden Era. From Slick Rick, label dominated street fashion to breakdancing to the out break of crack cocaine in the hood the Jacka was there and these are just a few of his thoughts. Get Up On Magic!

It might be hard to separate Lil B the artist from the controversy and his “BasedGod” mantra, but imagine this. If Lil B was just simply a rapper with the volume of downloads and videos he’s put out, you may not be into his lyrics but you’d have to respect his grind. Personally I like this joint and the video. Why can’t people respect an artist who is obviously a work in progress? We all are, it just so happens that Lil B (by choice) is constantly in the spotlight.

Here’s an allegory for you. My tai-chi teacher told me a myth that chinese medicine began with a man that had a window inserted into his stomach so that doctors could see exactly how every herb and medicine interacted with in it and then the effect it had on the body. To me that’s what Lil B’s music is, it’s as untainted a window as he can give you into his head. One day I believe the kid will seriously be ILL as hell lyrically…shit he’s already been gassin’ on his Buddens disses and now this joint. It’s like Eminem said, “What are you going to do against the man that strangles himself?” B is so forthright about his flaws and faults, you just love it or leave it alone.

Dj Amen’s Bay Area Freshman 2010 (a play off of XXL’s Freshman Top 10) have been garnering some buzz. It’s great recognition in my opinion. So many dope Bay Area artists make music day in and day out with out having an organization that will shine a light on their collective works. That’s what makes this past Thursday so important for Bay Area hip hop talent. The Oakland Tribune organized a photo shoot with the group for an upcoming piece. Only time will tell what comes next for this exceptional group of artists. Check it out.

Freshman 10 (standing left to right) : DaVinci, P.Child, Nio The Gift, Cousin Fik, Roach Gigz, IMSU!, Moe Green, Jay Anthony, Truth Live, DB The General.

J. Stalin – D-Boy Blues 2010 [Music Video]

Chasen Paper, 16 June, 2010

This song from J.Stalin dropped awhile back but my homie Al_Jieh of SWTBRDS said something to me that made me revisit it. He said if he was building a label out of Bay Area artists, J.Stalin would be his Plies. I’m a Stalin fan most of the time. When he said this I thought, “Fuck yea, I’d way rather listen to Stalin’s lyrics on the radio kickin’ his version of hood anthems over Plies’ ‘Bust It Baby’.” So there you go. J.Stalin has always been pretty beastly on the mic. Before his SF Guardian covers I was introduced to him through his work with The Jacka going back at least five years now. His style of rhyme was colorful because it’s blunt, heart felt and ruthless at the same time. It’s the depth he has that isn’t always obvious but is always there behind the scenes fueling his next step.

Me Gusta-”Her”

Chasen Paper, 16 June, 2010

Me Gusta is a production duo out of San Jose comprised of Sean Paul Richards & Dominic Lopez. I’ve been staying on top of Me Gusta’s music for a few years now. Ever since their remixes of Fab’s “Breathe” and the Pack’s “Van’s” song…yea that long. Their samples and chops were always addictive and always hip hop but tweaked with dance, electro, & Rock. “Her” is more dope for your vein. If you want to check out more from these kids check out their Myspace. That’s all.

Miss Haze of the Bay Area trio 40 Love just dropped this piece of “Hard Candy”. Haze’s delivery is so well enunciated at times you can feel the words leave the tip of her tongue. I must say though I’ve skimmed through this shit three times as I’ve built this post and I’ve already picked out a few smooth jams I really dig. Hit the download button and GET UP ON MAGIC!
