Bambu has set the bar very high for emcees and the times of the “cool” or “swaged” out artist who could ride on charisma alone are fading fast. Bambu is at the fore front of a forth coming sea change of dudes who fuse socially aware rhymes with real mic skills and visuals cropped straight from his own life experiences as well as the that of youngsters who deal with the sames truths on on a daly basis in this world. Theres too much actual shit happening out there in the wold for the people to continue to be content with these wanna be cats who express no sense of higher self in their raps. This is real shit homie, GET UP ON MAGIC!

Here’s a counter weight to what the news media decided was a more sensational story which was a few knuckles heads looting Jordans and Weaves. Instead of just saying that a majority of protesters were peaceful, they should have focused on the message being expressed and the community forum that organizations from across the country were creating like Bambu in the KmB video above.

Bambu & Kiwi collectively known as Native Guns have a message for you. Get Up On MAGIC!

________________________________________________________________________________

Hours away from the verdict of the historic Oscar Grant trial, rappers Kiwi and Bambu (along with DJ Phatrick) have reunited as Native Guns to release their latest song, “Handcuffs” (produced by Six Fingers).

“With so much emotion and uncertainty around the outcome of this case, we felt a sense of urgency to come back together and do this track” states Kiwi, a former Oakland resident. Bambu adds, “We both experienced the L.A riots in 1992 firsthand, and we wanted to remind people of the lessons learned from back then, so we can keep them in mind as we move forward with this current situation.”

Kiwi breaks the song down further: “The message is threefold: to validate the community’s anger around the blatant murder of this young man, to spark a discussion and deeper analysis of what police are there to do beyond just enforcing the law, and to get folks to think strategically about how they want to react to this verdict, whatever it ends up being.”

This is the group’s first song together in nearly 4 years. Their critically-acclaimed debut album, “Barrel Men” (2005), followed by the “Stray Bullets Vol 2″ Mixtape (2006) received rave reviews and built them a loyal following that carries over to this day. Their material continues to be used in both college classrooms and community youth workshops alike.

The American justice system is coming to close in the case of Oscar Grant any day now. A jury heard the testimony from both sides and will have a verdict as soon as they stop calling in sick. For Oscar’s family despite BART’s monetary disbursement to his baby daughter, even a conviction of second degree murder for which Mehserle will face 20 years in prison, will be of cold comfort. A conviction of involuntary manslaughter could see Mehserle walk away with a paltry 2 years for executing an un-armed citizen and that could ignite a powder keg of anger in the streets and hoods across the country. Channeling the people’s rage in that event will be tough but it has to be done for anything lasting and effective to emerge from the abuse committed against one of the people. That is why this P.S.A from Bambu (emcee, activist, community organizer & father) is so important. Take a minute and soak in his words above and below.

“On January 1, 2009, local Oakland transit police murdered Oscar Grant in cold blood. His murderer is currently on trial in Los Angeles, and the jury is currently in deliberation. We are days away from a verdict and Bambu decided to take to the intersection of Florence and Normandie in his hometown of LA to send a message of solidarity to the people of Oakland. Bambu pushes for safe and calculated mobilizing, but makes it a point to encourage the natural emotion that people may be overwhelmed with if the verdict is not a just one.

Organize. Strategize. Project.

Research and find out where you can mobilize with others in your city.

Hella westcoastin’ in NYC.
Cruised around the L.E.S. in a three-Cadillac caravan last Saturday before the STKxNYC show to check out the shoot for Bambu’s “Paper Thin” (off the …paper cuts… EP) music video featuring Chace Infinite. Directed by Andrew Graziuso of LightWork Media, the same team who did Bam’s “Quit” video, shot last year during the Philippine Independence Day Parade. As we continue our march to solidifying ourselves as one of the preeminent WEST COAST indie hip hop sites, 24KMilkCrate.Com had to do a piece with Bambu. He is one of the ILLEST performers and emcees in hip hop music right now. A perfect blend of Los Angeles gangster, political and social savy, and pro active aggression his rhymes aren’t to be taken lightly ever. Always profound his stage show is that of a polished professional coupled with a killer delivery. Bambu (or Bam) says he only has one more album in him, but he’s just hitting his prime so forgive the look of skepticism on our faces. For now though, check this live shit we got for you at the show he rocked with the Blue Scholars this Friday in Los Angeles at the historic Viper Room on Sunset and GET UP ON MAGIC!
